Notes — From the Lab
Perseus in Ektachrome
A Greek myth told without a word, on Super 8 Ektachrome, on a Kent shore where the tide uncovers fifty million years. A note from the Lab on Jack Davies's Perseus.

A three-minute, wordless retelling of the Perseus myth, shot on Super 8 Ektachrome on the Kent coast, in which the hero's journey becomes an act of breaking free from the limits society imposes.
Why it matters
Perseus shows how much a short film can hold. In three minutes and without a single word, Jack Davies takes one of the oldest hero stories in Western culture and turns it inside out: the myth of a hero who conquers becomes a story of self-liberation. Shot on Super 8 Ektachrome, almost entirely in slow motion after the camera jammed at 54 frames per second, it is a film that trusts images completely, and it has travelled: from MicroActs, on the London artists' film scene, to Inflamável, the Portuguese festival devoted to Super 8 and 16mm, an honourable mention at MIX NYC and the first volume of 50% Film's short cinema programme, with selections on four continents. Davies also works as a novelist, poet and sculptor, and it shows: Perseus moves with the density of a poem and the physicality of sculpture. A small film with a large reach, and a strong voice from the independent UK scene.
